Detects antibodies to FIV in feline whole blood, serum and plasma. FIV ("feline AIDS") is a species-specific viral infection of the immune system, not contagious to humans; it is most often transmitted through bites between cats. The test quickly and cheaply checks cats with symptoms (proneness to illness, gingivitis, anaemia, neglected appearance) and is suitable for routine screening of free-roaming cats. A positive result should be confirmed by Western blot; kittens under 6 months may carry maternal antibodies — retest later.
A confirmatory analysis is recommended after positive results of some tests.
