An immunological test for Dirofilaria immitis antigens in canine blood. The parasite is common in the Americas and the Mediterranean but is spreading through Europe; it is transmitted by various mosquito species. An adult heartworm can reach 30 cm and settles in the blood vessels near the heart. If infection is suspected, the animal should be tested as soon as possible. It becomes detectable roughly 6–8 months after infection.
A confirmatory analysis is recommended after positive results of some tests.
